llms.txt for online stores: what it does and what it does not

What llms.txt is, what the data says about it, and why it is still worth ten minutes for a Shopify or WooCommerce store. No hype, just the facts.

llms.txt gets sold as "the robots.txt of the AI era" and as a way to rank in ChatGPT. The first claim is half true. The second is not supported by any data we have seen. Here is what the file is, what the evidence says, and why it can still be worth ten minutes of your time.

What llms.txt is

llms.txt is a plain text file at the root of your site (yourstore.com/llms.txt). It was proposed in 2024 as an open format. It holds a short description of your site and a list of your important pages, each with a one line note. It is written in Markdown so a language model can read it with no parsing.

A sitemap lists every URL for search engines. llms.txt picks the few pages that matter and explains them. Think of it as a short index for a visitor that reads text only.

What the data says

Be honest with yourself about the evidence:

  • Google has said it does not use llms.txt. John Mueller has repeated this several times.
  • Ahrefs found that 97% of llms.txt files did not get a single request in a month.
  • SE Ranking looked at 300,000 domains and found no link between having llms.txt and being cited by AI.

So llms.txt is not a ranking factor. Anyone who sells it as one is selling hype.

So why bother?

Because it costs almost nothing and has real, if small, uses:

  • AI agents and tools read it. Coding agents, research tools and some assistants check for llms.txt when they land on an unknown site. It points them to the right pages.
  • It forces you to answer a useful question. Which ten pages explain my store best? Most stores have never written that down.
  • Platforms are adopting it. Shopify started serving a native llms.txt for every store in May 2026. When the largest commerce platform ships a file by default, it is cheap insurance to have one.

The right weight: a ten minute task, not a strategy. In the AISaysYes score it counts for very little, and we say so in the report.

Rules that keep it useful

  • One sentence at the top: what you sell and to whom.
  • Main categories, not every product.
  • Shipping, returns and contact. Shoppers ask assistants about these all the time.
  • Your two or three best guides, if you have them.
  • Absolute URLs that work. A dead link in llms.txt is worse than no file.

How to add it on Shopify

Shopify already serves one. Open yourstore.com/llms.txt and read it. If it covers your main collections and policies, you are done. You do not need a paid app for this.

How to add it on WooCommerce

Two options:

  1. Install the free Website LLMs.txt plugin. It has around 30,000 active installs and builds the file from your content.
  2. Or make it by hand with our free llms.txt generator. Fill in your store name, one sentence, and your key URLs. Download the file and upload it to the root of your site with your host file manager or SFTP.

Then open yourstore.com/llms.txt in a browser. Check that it shows plain text, not your 404 page. Some themes return a pretty "page not found" with a 200 status, and that looks like a file to a lazy checker.

llms.txt, robots.txt and agents.md

Three files, three jobs:

  • robots.txt says who may come in. It is the one that can actually block AI assistants, so check it first.
  • llms.txt says what is worth reading once they are in.
  • agents.md says what an agent may do on your store, like browse the catalog or prepare an order for the user. You can make one with the agents.md generator.

What moves the needle instead

If you have one evening, spend it on the things assistants verifiably use:

  1. Bot access. robots.txt and your CDN. Cloudflare changed its AI bot defaults on September 15, 2026. Read how to check if Cloudflare blocks ChatGPT.
  2. Product structured data with price, currency and availability. See product schema for AI shopping agents.
  3. A product feed in Google Merchant Center.

Then add llms.txt as the finishing touch.

Common llms.txt mistakes

  • Listing every product. A file with 5,000 links is a sitemap with a different name. Keep it to the pages that explain your store.
  • Marketing copy instead of facts. "The best shoes in the world" helps nobody. "Waterproof trail shoes, sizes 6 to 14, ships to the US and UK" helps an agent answer a real question.
  • Setting it and forgetting it. If you close a category or change your return window, update the file. Stale facts are worse than none.
  • Expecting traffic from it. Treat it like a sign on the door. It helps the visitors who look for it. It does not bring new ones by itself.

Check it in 30 seconds

Run the free AISaysYes scan. It checks whether your llms.txt exists and is real text, and it checks the things that matter more: robots.txt rules for AI bots, product data and prices. You get a 0 to 100 score with each item explained. The guide orders the fixes by impact, and the ranking shows how other stores do.
